Most Commonly Asked Questions About Theatreworks' Auditions

Q: Is there a minimum age to audition for Theatreworks USA?

A: Yes. You must be at least 18 years of age to audition.

Q: Do you have to live in New York City to audition?

A: TheatreworksUSA is a New York based touring company & all auditions and rehearsals are in NYC.

Q: If I'm cast can I get my Equity card?

A: Yes. We work under the Equity TYA (Theater for Young Audiences) contract. You must be or become a member of the union to perform under this weekly contract.

Q: Do I need to be an Equity member to audition?

A: No. When we hold auditions, there are both Equity AND Non Equity calls unless specified.

Q. I always read in Theatreworks casting notices "actors will be signed as Assistant Stage Managers." What does this mean?

A: Assistant Stage Manager duties include load-in and load-out responsibilities for all performances. It also requires actors to handle props and costumes along with the set. This is part of the Equity TYA weekly contract.

Q: I've auditioned for Theatreworks in the past and have gotten many call backs but was never cast. Should I continue to audition?

A: We encourage actors to audition for us again in the future. Casting (sometimes up to fifteen shows per tour semester) is very much like a huge jigsaw puzzle. Sometimes one particular actor may be called back five or six times within a two week period! Please understand it is not because we at Theatreworks USA are so indecisive. Fifteen shows require fifteen different directors and writers and each show will have its own call back day. It's as if you've gotten five call backs for five different shows and five different directors and not five call backs for the same casting director. That's a great audition record! KEEP COMING TO YOUR CALL BACKS! That fifth or sixth call back may be the one that gets you cast.

Q: How long does a Theatrework USA tour last?

A: The tours can last anywhere from 2-6 months. Our tours correspond with the school year. So fall tours are usually September -December and spring tours can last anywhere between January -June.

Q: When does Theatreworks USA usually hold their auditions?

A: We usually have auditions year round. These auditions are advertised in Backstage. Keep your eyes peeled.

Theatreworks USA is the nation’s largest-serving non-profit theatre for young audiences. With over 48 years of experience and an annual audience of 3 million kids, Theatreworks is a prolific producer of theatre that commissions up to three productions per year and produces 27 tours annually that travel to 46 states.

Theatreworks relies on support staff throughout the year and interns play a critical role in helping various departments’ complete day-to-day needs and long-term projects. Interns are treated like staff members and are expected to take their responsibilities to Theatreworks seriously. Full-time interns (over 20 hours per week) are eligible for a weekly stipend. In addition, Theatreworks strives to provide a great mentorship opportunity for college students and we are happy to formulate a mutually-agreed-upon curriculum for college credit.

Interested applicants should submit a cover letter and resume via email to the appropriate department contact. No phone calls please. Theatreworks USA is an equal opportunity employer.

Development Department: Seeks a full-time or part-time intern for summer 2010 and/or fall 2010.

The Development Department is undertaking several exciting new initiatives. The Development Intern will be treated like a member of the Theatreworks staff. Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Assisting in the planning and execution of Free Summer Theatre Opening Night. Must be available the night of Thursday, July 15.
  • Begin assisting with the development of the Annual Gala, our largest fundraising event.
  • Participating in Community TeamWorks Day, Theatreworks USA’s summer youth project in conjunction with Goldman Sachs and the Hudson Guild.
  • Facilitating and compiling evaluation statistics of Newark’s Summer Learning Initiative, sponsored by Prudential.
  • Monitoring evaluations submitted on Survey Monkey and sent in by mail and providing analysis.
  • Overseeing Theatreworks USA’s technology initiatives including our Facebook presence, blog presence, and Development components on the TWUSA website.
  • Implementing Theatreworks USA’s Annual Report.
  • Providing basic assistance with proposals and grant research.

The Development Intern will work primarily with the Development department but will also interact with the Marketing and Education departments. This is an ideal position for Philanthropy or Arts Management students or for those interested in fundraising and the arts. The ideal candidate is extremely tech-savvy (web, blog, Facebook, social-networking applications), a solid editor and writer, trust-worthy, and someone that likes to think outside-the-box. Theatreworks is home to a warm and casual office environment with an opportunity to get hands-on experience in “real” work; you won’t be photocopying all the time. We are looking for candidates that can dedicate at least 10 hours per week to the Development Intern role.

We are dedicated to providing a valuable and hands-on learning experience. Here’s what one of our interns had to say about their recent experience:

The term “intern” is held very loosely at Theatreworks USA.  I was treated like an employee in every sense of the word, presented with challenging and dynamic projects that introduced me to areas of theatre I had not even considered exploring.  I truly felt like part of the team.  I am returning to school this fall with an entirely new viewpoint on how to collaborate with theatre professionals, and perhaps even a new career path I’d like to follow.

Interested applicants should contact Liz Alsina, Director of Development, at lalsina@twusa.org. No phone calls please.

Marketing Department: Seeks an intern for summer 2010 and/or fall 2010

Interns at Theatreworks USA become an integral part of the Marketing department interacting with hundreds of theaters and schools across the country.  Duties will include (but not be limited to):

  • Assisting in preparation for regional and national conferences
  • Assembling press and publicity packets
  • Contributing to the creation of new marketing materials, such as flyers and brochures
  • Maintaining ongoing relations with customers
  • Contract entry and database maintenance
  • General support for marketing reps

Candidates should have an interest in theatre management or arts administration, good phone manner, experience working on a PC, knowledge of MS Word, Outlook and Excel.   Theatreworks is offering industry contacts, responsibility and the chance to find out if a career in arts administration and/or arts education is right for you.

Interested applicants should send a cover letter and resume to Paula Marchiel, Marketing Associate, at MarketingInternship@twusa.org  No phone calls please.

Casting Department: Seeks an intern for summer 2010 and/or fall 2010

Become part of a busy department that works on as many as 30 shows a year.  Henry Winkler, Roger Bart, Daphne Rubin-Vega, John Lloyd Young, Lauren Molina, John Tartaglia, Jeff Marx & Bobby Lopez, Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty are some of the many talented actors and writers that got their start with us!  Duties will include (but not be limited to):

  • Reviewing actor submissions
  • Scheduling & confirming auditions
  • Corresponding with agents
  • Assisting in audition process
  • Supporting Casting/Artistic Team

Ideal candidate will have a passion for theatre and/or previous casting internship experience. The position includes administrative duties such as typing, heavy phone coverage, & assisting with daily office operations. Work with theatre professionals and when time permits even sit-in on auditions.  Make amazing contacts, be a part of the theatrical process, and have fun!

Interested applicants should send a cover letter and resume to Molly Meador, Associate Artistic Director, at casting@twusa.org.   No phone calls please.
